The Almora Story | with Himadri Hans Handloom

July 2019, we had the opportunity to visit one of Uttarakhand’s many beautiful districts – Almora. The trip was made possible by Himadri Hans Handloom, an initiative by The Hans Foundation in the Himayalas.

Himadri Hans Handloom ia a social organisation, which has been working towards empowerment of women artisans for 20 years, in one of the Himalayan region in India called, Almora, Uttarakhand. Himadri Hans Handloom is an initiative began with few local women of Almora district with the objective of getting the women out of the drudgery and reviving the dying art of weaving from hills.

After years of struggle and hard work, today the initiative has turned into two weaving centres, where almost 200 women are making world class handmade products. This initiative has not only helped women of hills, but also it has taken the local art to international level with our artisans expertise on fibres like Pure Cashmere, Alpaca, Lambswool and Merino. Our product line includes Shawl, Stole, Scarves, Throws, running fabric along with Hand knitted Caps, Gloves, Sweaters, scarves etc. We can proudly say that our processes are ethical and follows sustainable fashion norms. To our accreditations like Handloom Mark, Craftmark and fair Trade certification.
